How to Store Candles, Wax Melts and Tea Lights Properly

Proper storage of your Angus & Florrie candles, wax melts, and tea lights is key to keeping them smelling beautiful and performing at their best. When stored correctly, fragrance lasts longer, wax stays in perfect condition, and every burn feels just as lovely as the first.

Whether you are saving scents for a special season or simply want to keep your favourites fresh, a few simple steps can make all the difference.

Keep Away From Sunlight

Direct sunlight is one of the biggest enemies of scented wax. UV rays can fade candle colours, soften wax, and gradually break down essential oil blends. This can result in weaker fragrance and changes in scent over time.

Store candles, wax melts, and tea lights in a cool, dark cupboard or drawer, away from windows and bright rooms. Original packaging is ideal as it offers extra protection from light.

Avoid Heat Sources

Heat can cause wax to soften, sweat, or partially melt, even when it is not in use. This may lead to scent loss, misshapen candles, or wax melts sticking together.

Keep your products away from radiators, fires, ovens, and warm appliances. A consistently cool room temperature helps preserve both the wax structure and the fragrance oils.

Use Airtight Containers for Wax Melts

Wax melts contain a higher fragrance load than candles, which means scent can evaporate over time if left exposed to air.

Storing wax melts in airtight containers, sealed bags, or their original packaging helps lock in fragrance and prevents scent mixing. This is especially important if you store multiple scents together, as essential oils can easily transfer between melts.

Store Candles Upright

Candles should always be stored upright to keep the wax level and wick centred. Laying candles on their side can cause wax pooling or wick movement, which may affect how evenly the candle burns later on.

Before storing, ensure the wick is straight and centred, this helps create a cleaner, more even burn when you light it again.

Protect Tea Lights

Tea lights are small but mighty when it comes to fragrance. Keep them in their original box or a lidded container to protect them from dust and temperature changes. Storing them loosely can lead to dents in the cups or scent loss over time.

Keep Scents Separate

Strong fragrances can influence one another if stored too closely together. If possible, keep different scent families separate, for example florals in one container and fresh or herbal scents in another. This helps ensure each fragrance smells exactly as intended when used.

Long Term Storage Tips

If you are storing candles or wax melts for several months, consider checking them occasionally. A quick look ensures they are staying cool, dry, and free from dust. Rotating older scents to the front also helps you enjoy everything at its best.
